As you likely know, Google has released their entry into the browser market. Dubbed, “Chrome” it’s positioned as a revolutionary take on browsers. Don’t know about that, but I’ve been test driving this thing operating MediaSilo for a couple days now and I’m fairly impressed.
Gotta tell you, I’m a little disappointed Google decided to release the PC version with just a tease for Mac and Linux, but given their target, it’s probably the right move. If you haven’t seen Chrome, the biggest change is the shift of the tabs. They’ve been moved from below the adress bar to the very top of the browser window. It took me a little while to get used to it, but after a couple days, I think it’s better. There are loads of other features they say are really revolutionary, and most are pretty good, but honestly when something like this comes out, the first thing we want to know is how MediaSilo runs and looks on it.
After two days of running my MediaSilo account in and out of Chrome, I’ve yet to find a glitch. (It should be pointed out, I’m on the short bus with the other remedial kids at MediaSilo when it comes to code, structure and processing, so I’ll defer to Simon and Kai on those things.) Still, the browser seems to handle MediaSilo well, in fact it seems a lot faster than IE or Firefox on the PC. If you’re on a PC platform and you try it, please let us know what you think.
Maybe the coolest thing I like about chrome is the “application shortcut” feature for online apps. It puts a MediaSilo shortcut right on your desktop, start menu or quick launch bar. The app then opens in a dedicated window, so it feels almost like a true desktop app. Give it a try:
1. Go to http://youraccount.mediasilo.com
2. Click the Page menu in the upper right of the browser. (it’s to the left of the wrench
3. Select Create Application Shortcuts
4. In the “Google Gears” dialong box, select the checkboxes where you want your MediaSilo shortcut placed on your computer: Desktop, Start Menu, and/or Quick Launch Bar
5. Click OK
Give it a try. You can learn more about the benefits of app windows on Google Chrome here. Many of the shortcuts don’t really apply to MediaSilo, but we’re still working on giving you more and more features, so they might come in handy, soon.
Can’t wait to see the Mac version.
