August 5 Updates – Build 6190

August 5th, 2009

Ah, those pesky bugs. Thanks to some loyal silo heads we were able to squash a few more this week. Our mobile users will be happy to hear that two pressing issues on the iPhone were resolved (within just hours of hearing about them).

We also continue to receive great feedback on the transcription service introduced a few weeks back. Updates will include better formatting for PDF and HTML views of transcripts, thumbnails for each timecode, and a more streamlined interface for submitting and managing transcription requests. Most likely, our pricing will also change somewhat based on your feedback and our internal cost analysis but will remain very low. Updates will be available soon.

Bugs (oh how much we hate them):

  • Fixed playback problem on the mobile app (mobile.mediasilo) that affected certain file types
  • Fixed login error on mobile app when authentication failed
  • Fixed a bug that disregarded specific workspaces in the search results window
  • Fixed a problem with the QuickLink feature in the grid view that would result in no response when clicked
  • FTP dropbox now correctly shows the number of new video and non-video files (previously just video files were counted)
  • Fixed a rare bug that made certain workspaces unavailable to some users after user preferences were updated

While we’re busy working on major new features to be announced later this summer, we are managing to pick away at the list of feature requests we get. You have Chris Fournelle from Frontline to thank for the “Direct-to-Workspace” upload via FTP, and Scott Jacobson from ITV pioneered the multi-file-download service we are introducing this week. Keep the feedback coming so we don’t run out of things to do (like that ever happens).

New Features:

  • Added “Direct to Workspace” upload via FTP; FTP now shows a listing of all accessible workspaces and files can be uploaded directly to a workspace.
  • Added notifications to files uploaded to a workspace via FTP
  • Notification emails now contain a link to turn off individual notifications directly from within the email (no need to log in)
  • Implemented tags for non-video assets
  • Implemented tag editing for multiple asset (select assets and right-click Metadata, then select the Tags tab)
  • Added comma separated list of tags to the metadata panel
  • Removing an asset from the library now asks the user to remove it from all workspaces and lineups; file is deleted immediately
  • Decreased size of MediaSilo by 40%
  • Implemented multi-file download; files are archived and an email gets sent to the user once files are ready for download. Archives can be downloaded for 24 hours before they are deleted.
  • Implemented Amazon CloudFront as a default for all video streaming
  • Posted new screencast on how to generate Final Cut Server proxies with the Elgato Turbo.264HD

July 15 Updates – Build 6085

July 16th, 2009

No rest for the wicked! Two big new feature updates this week (Transcriptions and Streaming) plus a laundry list of enhancements. Oh yes, and we managed to weed out some more nasty nasty bugs. Thanks to all of you who helped us identify problems and suggested new features.

Bug Fixes:

  • Fixed a bug where user preferences for the delivery of annotations would not save properly
  • Fixed an issue with workspace assignment for newly created users
  • Accounts upgrading from Home or Office to Hollywood can immediately use ftp and don’t have to save user preferences again
  • Many bug fixes and improvements to video playback controls (see below)
  • Fixed an error that appeared in the library if no assets were present
  • Implemented improved metadata extraction from uploaded files especially for correctly capturing dimensions and duration
  • Fixed a bug that would sometimes prevent a metadata from being copied from one workspace to another
  • Fixed a bug that would not return the user to the workspace after right-clicking “Return to Workspace”

New Features:

  • True streaming in MediaSilo: users with large files will see a significant improvement in the ability to seek and play back large and long video files. If streaming video is blocked due to firewalls, stream will default to progressive playback on normal http 80 ports.
  • Launched beta of transcription service. Free during beta. Learn more at http://knowledgebase.mediasilo.com/questions.php?questionid=49.
  • Added “User.GetCurrent” function to API
  • Added “Transcript” metadata field. Moving the mouse over this field reveals an excerpt of the transcript.
  • Added Transcript to tooltip in a workspace
  • Added “View Assets” permission. This allows a workflow whereby many contributors can upload footage through MediaSilo but not see any files contributed by others.
  • Added “Transcription Service” permission. Users with this permission will be able to request transcripts.
  • Implemented right-click delete function in lineups
  • Right-click deleting in a workspace view now deletes all selected assets

MediaSilo iPhone WebApp Launched

February 16th, 2009

<p><br></p>

If you’ve been looking for a way to view your MediaSilo clips from your iPhone we have some good news: we just launched the MediaSilo WebApp which lets you log in to your account, browse workspaces, preview iPhone optimized clips, read comments, and submit feedback. We are also making the source code available for download so feel free to tinker and improve. MediaSilo has been generating iPhone clips for the past couple of months. All files uploaded since then can play back on the iPhone.

The Web App is accessible at http://iphone.mediasilo.com and the source code (written in Adobe ColdFusion) can be downloaded here. More information about the API can be found here.

Updated – Version 1.8.2 Built 4800

February 11th, 2009

Minor updates to MediaSilo today: We added the “Title” and “Status” fields to improve the interoperability with Final Cut Server. By default, file names are now titles, but titles no longer have to contain the file name extension (.mov) to be downloadable. Minor bug fixes and speed optimization throughout the application.

More update goodness before the end of the week. Users with many video clips will see huge speed improvements when opening workspaces. A new pager at the top of the workspace now allows to move between sets of 50 assets at a time, instead of displaying all available clips at once. To make things run even faster, we optimized the load times of thumbnails in workspaces. Less sexy and not really a new feature, but very effective nevertheless.

With the number of files uploaded to MediaSilo skyrocketing, this was a much needed upgrade that was brought to our attention by one of our users.

Following our weekly release cycles, we have much more stuff in the pipeline for next week. Check this blog to find out what’s new and coming.

We managed to squeeze out one more update since yesterday’s big release: timecode offset. When taking clips out of a sequence, you are now able to change the timecode offset to match the exact place in the sequence so that exported annotations can fit perfectly on the timeline. It’s all part of the new metadata engine released yesterday. If you’re using FinalCut Server, you can export FCS’ Timecode Offset and it will work all the same. You’re welcome ;) .

MediaSilo Updates

January 20th, 2009

If you were wondering when the new features we showed at this month’s FinalCut Supermeet during MacWorld would make it online – your answer is here. We just pushed live about a dozen new updates, including new feature and long awaited bug fixes. Take a look at what’s new and stay tuned for more exciting news about MediaSilo coming later this week.

Features:

MetaData
Users can now set up custom metadata fields for each asset and set metadata on individual or a group of assets. Custom metadata shows up in the “Detail” window and is fully searchable. This feature is available for video clips and all other file types.

FinalCut Server integration
For users of Apple’s Final Cut Server it’s now possible to automatically send media and metadata to MediaSilo and back. MediaSilo accepts and displays metadata coming from FinalCut server and users can search metadata via the web. Approvals, comments, or annotations are market as metadata changes and can be sent back to FinalCut Server. Video tutorials on how to configure FinalCut Server will be posted shortly at http://www.mediasilo.com/university. This feature is currently in beta testing.

Search
A new search screen has been added to the Workspaces menu. Users can now search all metadata fields, including custom metadata and tags to quickly find files stored on MediaSilo.

Preview of image files
Uploading high resolution image files is now much easier. MediaSilo shows thumbnails and full-screen previews of JPG, PNG, TIFF and BMP.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed file download issue that made opening video and images impossible when downloaded
  • Added upload support for new file types, including InDesign and EPS files
  • Embedding multiple clips on the same page is now possible without the need to manually change the embed code thet MediaSilo generates
  • Fixed a bug that prevented some users from uploading custom email headers
  • Added right-click contextual menu to files other than video
  • Fixed sorting bugs in the media list view to correctly sort by date, rating, duration, and file size
