New Web Broadcast Module

May 7th, 2010

New channel look

With so much stuff going on around the iPad, NAB, and Final Cut Server workflows (more on that next week), we finally managed to push out a release with an updated Web Broadcast module. A beta has been seeded to selected accounts this morning and all users should have it by the end of the day.

What’s new:

  • Simplified User Interface – We brought all channel related functionality down to a single screen. No more popup windows and a much more streamlined ui will make deploying much easier.
  • Open Standard Players – We removed the MediaSilo proprietary players in favor of some open source favorites that are highly customizable. There is tons of documentation on customizing the players out there already, so no need to reinvent the wheel. We will be adding more player options in the future via presents, including the much requested HTML 5 player options.
  • Support for Streaming – Switching between progressive and streaming (rtmp and rtmpt) is now as easy as selection the option from a dropdown. Especially long-form content producers will appreciate the ability to embed video clips and allow users to seek anywhere on the timeline.
  • Secure Streaming Coming – Although this didn’t make it into this week’s build, it’s coming soon. Optional secure streaming adds the ability to stream via rtmpe with swf verification and MD5 hashed file names. If you don’t know what this is you probably don’t care.
  • Standards Based Customization – If you know your CSS, you’ll be able to customize the new players with ease. The embed code now includes CSS that can be changed by you.
  • More Control – Customize playlists to place them at the bottom, left, or right of the screen and choose dimension. We added a neat little option to have the player suggest dimensions to you based on the size of your videos and taking into account the various other elements such as the control bar or playlist.

As always, keep the feedback coming. User comments are critical in determining new features.

MediaSilo 2.0

December 14th, 2009

MediaSilo has officially launched version 2.0. In the great online world 2.0 is used rather loosely, but to us at MediaSilo it means something a little bit different.

2.0 is the culmination of a year of hard work, sweat, tears, and a lot of user feedback.

Users now have access to a new metadata engine that makes managing custom fields much easier. Transcripts, custom fields, and tags are now available on one simple screen and we have implemented batch-updating metadata on multiple assets – a real time saver when you’re dealing with a large number of assets.

Collaboration has been at the core of MediaSilo since the very beginning, and we’re excited to introduce a completely overhauled version of the module that introduces threaded discussions, an improved user interface for timeline-based annotations, easier access to Full Screen, QuickLink, and Download, as well as new export options. MediaSilo now supports three streaming protocols to enabled reliable and fast video playback in any environment: true streaming (rtmp), tunneled streaming (rtmpt), and progressive download (http).

Finally, MediaSilo.com has a new, fresh look. It was time to say goodbye to our old site that had served us well for much too long. Check it out and let us know what you think.

Finally, we wish everyone a Happy New year and want to express our sincerest appreciation for all Silo Heads out there. We feel privileged to work with so many of you to create tools that change workflows, save time, and open the doors to new opportunities. We look forward to working with you and for you for years to come.

From all of us at MediaSilo – Thank you.

Fall Update

October 28th, 2009

Wow – it’s been a busy end of summer for us here at MediaSilo. Summers are when our team goes into development mode and focuses on features, workflows, and general improvements to the platform. Simon puts on his headphones in July and doesn’t seem to take them off before October. Lindsay on the other hand is in full force setting up our Apple Store roadshow to start next month. Dan has been busy working with clients like The Jay Leno Show and NBC to implement some pretty cool workflows. As for me, I get to spend some time with our users to learn about their workflows so I can come up with the next 12 months of features.

One thing we realized is that with so much new functionality in the works it can get hard to communicate what’s coming and how MediaSilo is changing. We needed to take some time and think about how to tell our own story. The result is “Production Junkies“, a fictitious production company website that illustrates the many uses of MediaSilo. It’s a showcase that shows off some of the external workflows often encountered in a production environment and provides an outlet for us to demonstrate best practices.

Production Junkies uses our new player API that lets users customize or create from scratch appealing and immersive player experiences. Reels are so important to the pitching process and the new player capabilities provide some great out-of-the-box functionality to show your stuff like a pro. Check out the “Reel” tab on the site.

Client Review has always been key to MediaSilo. We heard you loud and clear with requests for a fully brandable and simplified review and approval application that can live on any server. Based on the MediaSilo API, this freely downloadable application can live on your servers and can be customized any way you like and is ideal for those “less-techie” clients. A basic PHP application connects to the MediaSilo API and allows developers to implement workflow solutions all on their own.

External Content Submission is all-too common and we saw an opportunity to make life a little easier when it comes to accepting footage form external contributors. Check out the “Contributors” tab to see how you can accept footage online that goes straight into your MediaSilo account.

We also have some good news for Final Cut Server users. We have officially launched the MediaSilo Cloud Companion for Final Cut Server - a service that connects to your local FCSvr database and mirror assets in the cloud. Check out http://www.mediasilo.com/fcs and sign up for a free trial. More on Cloud Companion in a later blog post.

We were just made aware that the latest Flash Player release causes problems streaming videos within MediaSilo. We are working on resolving this issue and expect operations to be normal by 11 am EST. Users can also change their preferences (Account / My Info / Preferences) to progressive video playback which has not been affected by this bug.

We will post an update here shortly.

McElroy Films: Local Production Company & MediaSilo Advocate

August 12th, 2009

Background

McElroy Films is a video production company located in Leominster, MA. They provide a comprehensive line up of high definition video production services for corporate, non-profit and educational clients in Massachusetts and New England. Additional services include, weddings, events, music video production and independent film making.

Testimonial

“MediaSilo is the perfect client collaboration solution. We work with a lot of organizations and businesses that need to review their videos quickly and efficiently. MediaSilo allows us to upload our videos and get them in front of our clients from the convenience of their own computer with out any special software. The user can rate, comment and approve videos in a timeline-base display. Once they’re done, MediaSilo notifies us and we’re able to make changes and move forward. This process has proven itself useful and has saved us on media and shipping costs.

Another great feature from Media Silo is its web broadcasting. We’re able to embed videos quickly for the web. One click of a button and it generates the appropriate code we need to publish our videos online. We’ve also found Media Silo’s channel feature to be very useful for our site by implementing McElroy TV. We created lineups for various categories of work and showcased them on our very own Internet TV channel powered by MediaSilo. The age of DVDs and hard media are fading away. We’re seeing the demand for online video content exploding. Most of our clients need their videos embedded and showcased on websites and blogs. MediaSilo has given us the tools to make our online video experience affordable and convenient to our clients and partners.”

Thanks Ben! We’re glad to have you guys on board. If you’re interested in speaking with the folks over at McElroy Films their contact information is listed below.

August 5 Updates – Build 6190

August 5th, 2009

Ah, those pesky bugs. Thanks to some loyal silo heads we were able to squash a few more this week. Our mobile users will be happy to hear that two pressing issues on the iPhone were resolved (within just hours of hearing about them).

We also continue to receive great feedback on the transcription service introduced a few weeks back. Updates will include better formatting for PDF and HTML views of transcripts, thumbnails for each timecode, and a more streamlined interface for submitting and managing transcription requests. Most likely, our pricing will also change somewhat based on your feedback and our internal cost analysis but will remain very low. Updates will be available soon.

Bugs (oh how much we hate them):

  • Fixed playback problem on the mobile app (mobile.mediasilo) that affected certain file types
  • Fixed login error on mobile app when authentication failed
  • Fixed a bug that disregarded specific workspaces in the search results window
  • Fixed a problem with the QuickLink feature in the grid view that would result in no response when clicked
  • FTP dropbox now correctly shows the number of new video and non-video files (previously just video files were counted)
  • Fixed a rare bug that made certain workspaces unavailable to some users after user preferences were updated

While we’re busy working on major new features to be announced later this summer, we are managing to pick away at the list of feature requests we get. You have Chris Fournelle from Frontline to thank for the “Direct-to-Workspace” upload via FTP, and Scott Jacobson from ITV pioneered the multi-file-download service we are introducing this week. Keep the feedback coming so we don’t run out of things to do (like that ever happens).

New Features:

  • Added “Direct to Workspace” upload via FTP; FTP now shows a listing of all accessible workspaces and files can be uploaded directly to a workspace.
  • Added notifications to files uploaded to a workspace via FTP
  • Notification emails now contain a link to turn off individual notifications directly from within the email (no need to log in)
  • Implemented tags for non-video assets
  • Implemented tag editing for multiple asset (select assets and right-click Metadata, then select the Tags tab)
  • Added comma separated list of tags to the metadata panel
  • Removing an asset from the library now asks the user to remove it from all workspaces and lineups; file is deleted immediately
  • Decreased size of MediaSilo by 40%
  • Implemented multi-file download; files are archived and an email gets sent to the user once files are ready for download. Archives can be downloaded for 24 hours before they are deleted.
  • Implemented Amazon CloudFront as a default for all video streaming
  • Posted new screencast on how to generate Final Cut Server proxies with the Elgato Turbo.264HD

July 15 Updates – Build 6085

July 16th, 2009

No rest for the wicked! Two big new feature updates this week (Transcriptions and Streaming) plus a laundry list of enhancements. Oh yes, and we managed to weed out some more nasty nasty bugs. Thanks to all of you who helped us identify problems and suggested new features.

Bug Fixes:

  • Fixed a bug where user preferences for the delivery of annotations would not save properly
  • Fixed an issue with workspace assignment for newly created users
  • Accounts upgrading from Home or Office to Hollywood can immediately use ftp and don’t have to save user preferences again
  • Many bug fixes and improvements to video playback controls (see below)
  • Fixed an error that appeared in the library if no assets were present
  • Implemented improved metadata extraction from uploaded files especially for correctly capturing dimensions and duration
  • Fixed a bug that would sometimes prevent a metadata from being copied from one workspace to another
  • Fixed a bug that would not return the user to the workspace after right-clicking “Return to Workspace”

New Features:

  • True streaming in MediaSilo: users with large files will see a significant improvement in the ability to seek and play back large and long video files. If streaming video is blocked due to firewalls, stream will default to progressive playback on normal http 80 ports.
  • Launched beta of transcription service. Free during beta. Learn more at http://knowledgebase.mediasilo.com/questions.php?questionid=49.
  • Added “User.GetCurrent” function to API
  • Added “Transcript” metadata field. Moving the mouse over this field reveals an excerpt of the transcript.
  • Added Transcript to tooltip in a workspace
  • Added “View Assets” permission. This allows a workflow whereby many contributors can upload footage through MediaSilo but not see any files contributed by others.
  • Added “Transcription Service” permission. Users with this permission will be able to request transcripts.
  • Implemented right-click delete function in lineups
  • Right-click deleting in a workspace view now deletes all selected assets

iPhone WebApp Updates

May 27th, 2009

Minor updates this week to our iPhone webapp, which can be accessed at mobile.mediasilo.com:

  • Login information is remembered
  • A UI bug was fixed when submitting comments and navigating back to a workspace
  • A display bug that showed an error in workspaces with no clips was fixed
  • Added a number of comments indicator if a clips has comments

More improvements to the iPhone app are coming soon, including the ability to visually customize the application. Stay tuned.

MediaSilo iPhone WebApp Launched

February 16th, 2009

<p><br></p>

If you’ve been looking for a way to view your MediaSilo clips from your iPhone we have some good news: we just launched the MediaSilo WebApp which lets you log in to your account, browse workspaces, preview iPhone optimized clips, read comments, and submit feedback. We are also making the source code available for download so feel free to tinker and improve. MediaSilo has been generating iPhone clips for the past couple of months. All files uploaded since then can play back on the iPhone.

The Web App is accessible at http://iphone.mediasilo.com and the source code (written in Adobe ColdFusion) can be downloaded here. More information about the API can be found here.
