We’re fresh off a great meeting of the LA Final Cut Pro Users Group.  If you’re a SoCal cutter and haven’t attended, you should!  We presented MediaSilo to the crowd of big-time pros, corporate creatives, post editors, indie creatives and newbies.  It’s a great mix of experience, talent and networking.  Some of the biggest names in the business are there every month and it’s a great opportunity to learn about the latest and greatest, solve that workflow issue that’s been haunting you or just hang with the Final Cut crowd.

It’s fun, informative, there’s great food and the best raffle west of the Mississippi.  Thanks to Michael and everyone at LAFCPUG!  Learn more about the group and look for details on next month’s meeting here.

MediaSilo University

September 16th, 2008

<br />

It’s September, and that means back-to-school.  Good news is, you’ve been accepted to MediaSilo University and classes start right away.  And don’t sweat it, you’re already enrolled.

We’ve crafted a curriculum to maximize your workflow using MediaSilo’s online toolsuite.  At MU you can set your own class schedule and learn at your own pace.  On the new section of our website, you’ll find a series of screencasts (classes) on video tools for Content Management, Online Collaboration and Web Broadcast.  There’s also a companion book that outlines all the features taught through the screencasts.  It’s a pdf, you can download or print out and use as a quick reference.  Check out the syllabus for this semester:

Getting Started - toolset summary and overview for asset management, collaboration and broadcast.

Content Management, Workspacesmanaging workspaces for optimum asset management, FTP workflow and using your dropbox, browsers, customizing workspace displays,

Content Management, Clips tags and sorting assets, asset options, working with clips, downloading files, direct links to assets, tags and sorting files, screen resolution and shortcuts

Collaboration, Usersuser management, roles and permissions, notifications and customizing messages

Collaboration, Workflowannotations, comments, ratings, approval workflow

Web Broadcast, Toolssingle clip players, managing channels, managing and maximizing line-ups, native file channel download, programming and distribution, channel embeds, re-programming channels

So, get to class!  Hit the books! The short time you spend in class at MediaSilo University will mean big savings in time, money and headaches and is far more practical than all that time you spent in college trying to figure out what “x” was.

Then, for old times sake, after an afternoon of studying, break out the beer bong!

MediaSilo in Chrome

September 4th, 2008

<p><br></p>

As you likely know, Google has released their entry into the browser market. Dubbed, “Chrome” it’s positioned as a revolutionary take on browsers. Don’t know about that, but I’ve been test driving this thing operating MediaSilo for a couple days now and I’m fairly impressed.

Gotta tell you, I’m a little disappointed Google decided to release the PC version with just a tease for Mac and Linux, but given their target, it’s probably the right move. If you haven’t seen Chrome, the biggest change is the shift of the tabs. They’ve been moved from below the adress bar to the very top of the browser window. It took me a little while to get used to it, but after a couple days, I think it’s better. There are loads of other features they say are really revolutionary, and most are pretty good, but honestly when something like this comes out, the first thing we want to know is how MediaSilo runs and looks on it.

After two days of running my MediaSilo account in and out of Chrome, I’ve yet to find a glitch. (It should be pointed out, I’m on the short bus with the other remedial kids at MediaSilo when it comes to code, structure and processing, so I’ll defer to Simon and Kai on those things.) Still, the browser seems to handle MediaSilo well, in fact it seems a lot faster than IE or Firefox on the PC. If you’re on a PC platform and you try it, please let us know what you think.

Maybe the coolest thing I like about chrome is the “application shortcut” feature for online apps. It puts a MediaSilo shortcut right on your desktop, start menu or quick launch bar. The app then opens in a dedicated window, so it feels almost like a true desktop app. Give it a try:

1. Go to http://youraccount.mediasilo.com

2. Click the Page menu in the upper right of the browser. (it’s to the left of the wrench

3. Select Create Application Shortcuts

4. In the “Google Gears” dialong box, select the checkboxes where you want your MediaSilo shortcut placed on your computer: Desktop, Start Menu, and/or Quick Launch Bar

5. Click OK

Give it a try. You can learn more about the benefits of app windows on Google Chrome here. Many of the shortcuts don’t really apply to MediaSilo, but we’re still working on giving you more and more features, so they might come in handy, soon.

Can’t wait to see the Mac version.
